What makes a fabric "performance"

Performance fabric is upholstery woven or treated to resist liquids and stains, so a spill beads on the surface long enough to blot it. Most are tightly woven polyester or polyester blends. Look for two numbers on the listing. The first is the double-rub count, a measure of abrasion resistance: 30,000 or more holds up in a house with kids or pets. The second is the cleaning code. "W" means water-based cleaner, "S" means solvent only, and "WS" means either, which is the easiest to live with.

Weave matters for pets. A tight, flat weave doesn't snag on claws the way a loose or looped weave does, and short pile releases hair with a lint roller.

Check the frame and cushions too. Performance fabric on a weak frame still sags.

Frequently asked questions

Is performance fabric worth it with kids or pets?
Yes. It gives you time to blot spills before they set, and tight weaves hold up to claws better than boucle or loose linen.
What does a W, S or WS cleaning code mean?
W is water-based cleaner, S is solvent-based cleaner only, and WS takes either. The code is on the product page or the tag under the cushion.
How many double rubs should a family sofa have?
30,000 or more for daily use with kids or pets. Residential upholstery typically starts around 15,000 to 20,000.
Does performance fabric feel stiff?
Current performance fabrics feel like regular upholstery. Older treated fabrics had a slick, plastic hand that newer weaves have largely moved past.
